Skills training will be delivered on a range of topics including Strategic planning, Team-building, Fundraising and Conflict prevention, to make your visions and plans into reality, helping you become effective and productive on what you do and making the most of the year ahead.

Crossing Borders Mini Conference & AGM – SOAS – 30th October

On Saturday the 30th of October Crossing Borders will be holding its Annual General Meeting / Mini Conference at SOAS, in London!

Crossing Borders is a network of students whose mission is to remove barriers to healthcare for refugees, undocumented migrants and asylum seekers. The Mini Conference will provide a brilliant opportunity to learn more about Crossing Borders activities nationally and internationally and allow old and new members, throughout the network, to meet up and discuss ideas and plans for the future.

At the event we will have external speakers as well as various workshops focusing on education, projects and campaigns, and setting up and sustaining local branches. IFMSA March Meeting 2011

IFMSA March Meeting 2011 (taken from Medsin-UK Newsletter)

Do you want to represent Medsin internationally at the IFMSA’s General Assembly? Medsin will be sending a delegation to Jakarta, Indonesia for the IFMSA March Meeting, 5-11th of March 2011.

The IFMSA represents around 1.2 million medical students from over 90 countries, and is recognised by the World Health Organisation as the official forum for medical students. Medsin’s delegations represent Medsin’s policies and campaigns at a global level, and also engage in a number of activities through the IFMSA’s six Standing Committees, including Exchanges.

There will be places on the delegation for people of all levels of experience – newcomers are welcome! Check out the IFMSA March Meeting 2011 page, fill out the attached application form, and send to Elly at nationalcoordinator@medsin.org by October 31st.

Crossing Borders is relaunching this year (hence the name of this event) and as part of Medsin’s GLOBAL HEALTH FORTNIGHT, Crossing Borders brings you “REBORN”.

This night will consist of a short introduction from the committee, two guest speakers and a screening of the Peter Jackson movie – DISTRICT 9.

The night is completely free and will be held in the conference suites in the main John Foster Building!!

General Information

The Winterschool “Practical Orthopaedics" has been successfully performed for medical students from Austria during the last ten years. This will be the third English course with international and Austrian students together. The Stolzalpe Hospital is one of the largest Orthopaedic Departments in Austria and has developed specialization in eight different teams. It is well known as European Reference Centre for Hip and Knee Surgery and Paediatric Orthopaedics.

Content

The one week course is based on lectures, hands-on-workshops and bedside teaching. The lectures presented by the different teams cover most of the important topics in orthopaedics including conservative orthopaedics, pain management, anaesthesia and management of chronic pain patients. The practical-hands-on includes knee arthroscopy on a model, plating and nailing, sewing and casting. Bedside teaching is performed with clinical examination of the different joints, patient’s presentation, joining the outpatient department and the OR.

Goal

Learning the basic knowledge of the most important musculoskeletal diseases (excluding tumours), understanding for diagnostic procedures, conservative and surgical pathways including new developments and future perspectives

Requirements

• Medical student • Passed exams in anatomy, surgery and eventually orthopaedics • Good english language skills

Examination

Final oral test with practical examples and certificate

Clerkship

After the Winterschool you have the opportunity to do a clerkship for either one OR two weeks in the field of orthopaedics. The costs for the clerkship will be 8,00 EUR per day.

IMPORTANT: Insurance

Don’t forget to get an insurance in case of illness, accident and – if you take part in the clerkship – a liability insurance! You have to show it after your arrival.

Travelling to Austria (Stolzalpe)

As the hospital is situated in a quite remoted area, it’s the best you arrive in Vienna (http://www.viennaairport.com/jart/prj3/va/main.jart?rel=en&reserve-mode=active&content-id=1249344074214) or Graz (http://www.flughafen-graz.at/home/index.en.php?change_language=English). From Wien Meidling (Vienna) you take the train to Murau-Stolzalpe which lasts between 3,5 and 4 hours and From Graz you also take the train to Murau-Stolzalpe which lasts between 2,5 and 3 hours (http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp).

Selection criterion and application documents:

1. Sent before deadline!

2. English knowledge

3. Progress in your studies (surgery and optionally orthopaedics in consideration of additional training e.g. physiotherapy

4. Clerkships(orthopaedics or trauma surgery)

5. country of origin, because we want a mixed crowd;-) (max. 2 participants per country)

6. Letter of motivation

7. Curriculum vitae (including name, address, email, phone number and nationality)

8. Proof of studies (official letter of your medical college/university stating that you are a medical student and the year you are in)

We will send out the acceptance letters within one week after the deadline and we’ll publish the participants and the waiting list on this website!

Please confirm your Attendance within one week after you have received our acceptance (till 10.11.) After this date, the waiting list will rise in rank.

Don’t forget to tell us if you want to do a clerkship, too.
